Before you go out anywhere you should ask yourself:
- Where am I going?
- How am I going to get there and back?
- Am I prepared in case I have to change my plans?
- Does someone know where you are, and who you are with?
There are lots of stories in papers and television about young people going missing, being assaulted or being mugged. Sometimes this may leave us feeling at risk. However these do not always show the whole picture.
This is what you should know:
- Violent crimes get lots of media attention, but they are quite rare.
- Violent crimes involving strangers are even less common.
- There are lots of things you can do to prevent yourself being a victim
If you feel in danger, there are some simple steps you can follow and take action:
- Move away from the situation towards a busy public place as quickly as you can.
- If in trouble make as much noise as you can, your voice is a great defence.
- Carrying a shriek alarm is a great way to shock and disorientate an attacker, giving you time to get away.
- If threatened hand over what they want don’t try to be a hero, then call the police immediately, you'll most probably get your stuff back.
