Bullying

Bullying hurts ...

These are some ways children and young people are bullied:

  • being called names
  • being teased
  • being pushed or pulled about
  • being hit or attacked
  • having your bag or other possessions taken
  • having rumours spread about you
  • being ignored or left out
  • being forced to hand over money
  • being made fun of because of your race, religion, ability or sexuality

Effects of bullying

Bullying hurts. It can make children and young people scared and upset, making them so worried that they can’t work well at school. It can make some people feel that they are no good and that there is something wrong with them. Being bullied affects how people feel about themselves and their confidence. Bullies can sometimes make young people feel that it is somehow their own fault and can be left feeling helpless and lonely.

What can you do if you are being bullied:

  • tell someone you trust about it, this could be a teacher, personal adviser or a youth worker
  • talk to your family or friends about how you are feeling
  • go to the police
  • see a youth councillor
  • phone a help line
