Welcome to W4Y - The website for young people in Wealden

An Interview with Laura

The Wealden area has two Members of the East Sussex Youth Cabinet.  James Davies (who is also a Member of the UK Youth Parliament for North Wealden and Lewes) and Laura Hickmott.

W4y caught up with the Youth Cabinet Members to ask them a few questions on your behalf.

W4y: Laura what made you want to be an East Sussex Youth Cabinet

I wanted to be a youth cabinet member because I believe there is nothing more powerful than a young person’s voice and opinion. And this to me is the perfect opportunity to make everyone’s voice and opinion heard.

W4y: What in your opinion are the three most important issues for young people in Wealden?

In my opinion the three most important issues at the moment for young people are smoking, bullying, and things to do outside school/college.

W4y: Do you have to attend loads of boring meetings?

We do have to attend lots of meetings but none of them are boring because each one brings us closer to our aims and goals for the future. And plus we get to meet loads of new people and there really fun!

W4y: Laura, if you could change or make one thing happen for young people in this area what would it be?

If I could make something happen for young people in this area it would be to give them better things to do outside school/college. I really think that if young people have better things to do and better influences outside of school/college they will perform and act better in school/college.

W4y: What’s the best and worst thing about being an East Sussex Youth Cabinet Member?

The best thing for me is being able to take young peoples ideas to higher places and knowing that something is being done about them. The worst thing would be managing both youth cabinet work and college work.

W4y: Laura, have you heard of the Wealden Youth Website before this interview and have you used it?

Yes I have heard of it and have used it on many occasions. It’s a really good website, great to have loads of information all in one place.
