What Alcohol Does To Your Body

 

Did you know that alcohol contains a lot of calories, often more than you think.  So we have has listed some facts about alcohol and your body:

 

  • A pint of strong lager contains more calories than a Mars bar
  • People who regularly had five or more drinks in a row starting at age 13 were much more likely to be overweight or have high blood pressure by age 24
  • Alcohol can ruin your looks.  People who drink alcohol tend to have worse teeth than those who don't.  It can also give you bad breath and bad skin
  • A shot of tequila has as many calories as a small jam doughnut
  • People who continue drinking heavily well into adulthood risk damaging their organs, such as the liver, heart, and brain.
  • A non-drinking teenagers brain is twice as active as a teen who regularly drinks.  
  • Drinking can damage a student's ability to study well and get decent grades, as well as affect sports performance

Drinking alcohol can have its risks.  Alcohol has been linked to over 60 different health problems.  Drink too much alcohol and you increase your chances of becoming overweight, affecting your health and ruining your image!

More than 4 in 10 people who begin drinking before age 15 eventually become alcoholic.

This is called alcoholism, or alcohol dependence.   It’s a disease, and it can happen at any age.  Common signs include:

  • Craving: a strong need or urge to drink
  • Loss of control: not being able to give up or cut down drinking
  • Not feeling well after heavy drinking: upset stomach, sweating, shakiness, or nervousness
  • Want to drink more: to get the same effect as before
  • Neglecting activities: giving up or cutting back on other activities
  • Continuing to drink: even though alcohol is causing problems
